North Hills Complaints?

January 27 2009 5 Comments

We usually write about all the cool stuff that happens at North Hills Raleigh/Midtown, because, obviously, we like the area. We liked it enough to start a blog about it and keep it updated–most of the time, at least.

And there are a lot of great things at North Hills–the shops, restaurants, new Renaissance hotel, live music in the summer, so that’s why we spend 99% of the time talking about them. But today, we wanted to share some of the complaints we’ve heard about the area, and see what you think about them. If you have a complaint, feel free to post a comment here or contact us and let us know what you think.

Lack of Certain Essentials

If you live in North Hills, then you can walk to practically everything you’d need except these places, as noted by some of our readers:

  • a post office
  • book store
  • really good breakfast place
  • flower shop

Traffic

Traffic around the area can be unbearable at times, and this is probably the biggest complaint we’ve heard. It can be tough to find a parking spot sometimes during peak dinner and lunch hours. I haven’t had too much of a problem on Six Forks road, but traffic can back up a little there. The good news is that I believe Kane Realty is directly addressing this issue as it moves forward with construction. We’ll see what happens.

Construction/General

Some people just don’t like mixed-use developments. Nothing can really be done about this complaint except to point out that North Hills isn’t just another mall. If you live there, you probably like it, and feel a sense of connection to the area and the people there. Even though there is a lot of construction going on in the area, it should be great when it’s finished in a few years. Though some people will probably still insist that it is ugly or a bad use of land, and people are entitled to their own opinions. What do you think?

I personally don’t mind the traffic congestion and actually prefer it that way. It slows things down and encourages people to be WALKING around which they should be anyway. North Hills isn’t supposed to be a community for cars and trucks.

You make some good points as always.

Hot Point serves a pretty mean breakfast and now Coquettes does too. In a pinch, flowers can be had at Harris Teeter.

Can’t help you with the traffic ;)

I think it’s one of the most progressive areas in the Carolinas!

I live 2 miles from NH, a bit long for a walk (at least for me and my knees). Driving is the only way to get there, and, yes, traffic does stink. But then, traffic around almost any mall stinks.

But there are ways around that. If parking in the parking garage, don’t enter through the main entrance – use the back door. Drive around Target or behind Penney’s. It doesn’t really matter where you park once you are in the garage, most stores are a convenient distance at that point.

One place where parking/access is poor is Total Wines. If buying more than a bottle or two of wine, you will want to park close to the store. Trying to do that can be, well, trying at times. (But well worth it.)
