Bird Sightings in Harris Teeter

Birds in Harris Teeter

North Hills Buzz Exclusive: There are birds flying around and chirping in the Harris Teeter at North Hills Raleigh. I first noticed this last week when I was getting a fresh sub for dinner (Harris Teeter a 6-inch sub-of-the-day special that is about $2.50 and is excellent). I was standing at the deli waiting for my sub to be made when I noticed a bird fly from out from the deli area. At the time, I was pretty hungry and didn’t really give it much thought.

Tonight (January 21) I was at Harris Teeter again for some grocery shopping. I was pushing my cart down an aisle when I heard a chirping noise. At first, I thought this had come from my cell-phone, which makes a “chirp-ish” sound whenever I have a voicemail. But there was no voicemail. A few seconds later I heard the noise again and I looked up and found the source–not one, not two, but three birds were perched on the metal bars connected to the ceiling. I’m not a bird expert so I can’t tell you what kind they were. They didn’t sit still very long before flying to the far side of the store (where the beer, milk and OJ are).

I wonder if there are more than three birds who have made Harris Teeter their playground (or home?). Also, I’m not sure what the sanitation/health risks are with birds flying around food. But it just seems strange to me to see birds in a grocery store. I guess you can’t blame them–it’s pretty cold outside and if I was a bird I’d be trying to get warm, too.

Has anyone else seen the birds in Harris Teeter?

I have actually seen bird inside a grocery store before. There was a bird hanging out inside the Kroger in the town I used to live in. When I asked a lady working there about it, she said there was no way to shoo them out so they just let him fly around and around until he either found his way out or died. Very, very, very sad. :o (

I know!!! I’ve wondered what they eat… maybe they munch on the fruit at night when everyone is gone!

If I was a bird, I would definitely live in the warmth and eat all the free food the grocery store has to offer!

I see birds in the HT all the time. Don’t know if it’s the same ones, or different ones that come in and out. Just hope I don’t see any bird “poop” around there!

They are most likely house sparrows. An invasive species from Europe like Starlings that live in urban areas (you see them all over the seed areas of Home Depot). They breed in the large block letter neon signs outside storefronts and any other locales around a buildings. You wills see them in parking lots etc. They have a chirping call.
