Hope everyone had a great July 4th at North Hills! I was on vacation at the beach for most of last week so I’m trying to get back into the swing of things. In addition to the usual music (The Tams will perform this week), there are two unique events happening here:
Sangria Party at Luxe Apothecary

This is a special event at Luxe Apothecary for ladies and their friends. There will be an appearance by Paul Dorf National Makeup artist Ricardo Gutierrez and this should be a good time for people interested in beauty products and cosmetics. The event will start at 6:00pm, and you can call 919-881-7828 for more details.
Verses Jeans Sample Sale at NV
Victor Lytvinenko’s Verses Jeans are handmade right here in Raleigh and getting some press and attention in the fashion world. On Thursday from 5:30 - 7:30pm, Verses will have a special sale event at NV for Raleigh residents. Visit NewRaleigh.com for more information about Verses and this event.

The red carpet was out, the music was pumping, the models were dazzling and the house was packed last night here at North Hills for the Strut 2008 fashion show. I’m going to apologize in advance for the lack of quality pictures. My good camera broke recently so I had to use an old one.
I arrived at the show around 8:30pm. People were already inside mingling, sipping drinks and listening to some music by a girl in a fabulous red dress and her guitar player. My first thought was that they had really gone all out for this—smooth check-in process, lights, stage, runway, DJ, and premium seating (gift bags had been placed on the best seats). Everything from the music to the program bulletin was top notch.
I had definitely been excited about the event for a while, but I didn’t really know what to expect. It was my first real fashion show and I didn’t know anyone there. Luckily, everyone was friendly and I ended up seeing a guy I knew who was also in the same boat as me.
Since it was my first fashion event, here’s what I noticed to begin with. There were more guys there than I had expected, but still plenty of girls. Everyone was really well-dressed. I thought, where do these people hide during normal weekends in Raleigh? Because I’d never seen so many dressed-up people in one place in this city.
The show kicked off with a performance by Jean Morrisson with the North Carolina Dance institute. Jean can sing. Her voice singing “Out Tonight” was so clear that for the first half of the song I thought she was lip syncing. But no, she was just good.
After the song, an announcer (another great touch) called the designers one at time, and models would strut their stuff and show off the fashions. Fashions ranged from designer handbags and necklaces to jeans, corsets, dresses and more.

I really liked how the show moved quickly–not that I wanted to get out of there, but just that there was no down time for people to get bored. Every so often, the Sweet Tease Dance Company or North Carolina Dance Institute would come out and dance, and I enjoyed that a lot.

I think the event was definitely a success–all the general admission tickets sold out and everyone seemed to have a great time. These types of events are great for Raleigh, and especially North Hills, so I wouldn’t be surprised if this became an annual thing.
What did you think about Strut 08?

Just wanted to make sure yall were aware of some of the events here at North Hills this week. Thursday, the Midtown Music Shag Series continues with a performance by the Catalinas from 6:00-8:30pm. Everyone I’ve talked to has had a great time the last two weeks, so I’m sure this week will be just as fun. The only thing to keep in mind this week is that you are NOT allowed to bring your own coolers/drinks anymore…guess they want you to buy drinks. Since they’re putting on these events for free, you can’t really complain about this.
On Saturday night North Hills will play host to a really unique fashion event called Strut 2008. The event features fashion and designers that have local ties, and there will be a full runway and red carpet entrance. Organizers expect to sell out all 750 tickets, which range in price from $25 to $100 (all the $100 front row seats are gone already). The News and Observer recently did a nice write up on the event that you can read here, or you can see more details at the official Strut 08 website.
This will be filmed and turned into a 90-minute TV special airing Saturday May 10 at 8pm on CW 22. I’m not that knowledgeable about fashion in Raleigh, but I think this is a pretty interesting event for Raleigh and North Hills, and I look forward to seeing how it goes.

What: Strut 2008 is a music and fashion show that will take place at North Hills. The show will feature fashions from local designers such as Amy Stevenson (jeans), Holly Aiken (dresses) and Elizabeth Yarborough (jewelry). Models and area boutiques, such as NV Clothes for Men, will also be at the show, which will be televised. The show should be a good time for everyone, as there will be great fashions, live music and dance performances.
When: Saturday, May 3 at 9:00pm
Tickets: Prices range from $25-$100. Visit eTix to purchase your Strut 08 tickets
Other Details: Strut 2008 will take place at what they’re calling the “Store House” at North Hills. I think this is likely where the men’s sale took place, across from Wachovia Bank. The press release states that the venue will have a red-carpet entrance, 640 square-foot stage and 40-foot runway.
This is definitely an interesting event for Raleigh. The city isn’t really considered to be a fashion hot spot, but maybe this event will change people’s perceptions and make them aware of what’s going on the Raleigh fashion world. For more details about the event, visit Strut08.com.
